San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan has officially declared his candidacy for California governor, aiming to succeed the term-limited Gavin Newsom.

 

In his announcement, Mahan highlighted his administration's achievements, stating, "We've reduced unsheltered homelessness by nearly one-third after a decade of growth. We were rated the safest big city in America last year for the first time in over 20 years."

 

Since his election as mayor in 2022, Mahan has positioned himself as a moderate Democrat focused on pragmatic solutions. His support for Proposition 36 in 2024, a measure that increased penalties for certain crimes, underscores his commitment to public safety.
